Well… how did I not see it coming? I got surprised at work today after lunch with my baby shower. It was really thoughtful of them to do this for me. Everyone on the team contributed generously towards a gift card to be spent at Cadillac Fairview malls. I might have some pictures to share later…

For those who are in Toronto and vicinity, you might want to check out The Baby Time Show at the Metro Convention Centre (North Building) Oct 30 to Nov 1 (2009). They usually have one in the spring and one in the fall. We will be going to this expo with hopes to score sample products and to learn from the presenters and vendors. The only downside is that it costs $15 per person to get in, unless you go to your nearest Thyme Maternity or to the KidsAroundCanada website to get your $2 off coupon 😛

Event: The Baby Times Show (Fall 2009)

Location: Metro Toronto Convention Centre

Dates: Oct 30 to Nov 1, 2009 (10am to 6pm, or 5pm on Oct 31)

Price: $15 per person

Deal: $2 off coupon from Thyme Maternity, or click here to print your coupon from KidsAroundCanada website.

Baby Shower in Detroit September 16, 2009

I was thoroughly surprised when Tanya and Barb whom I used to work with at Ford Credit in Detroit decided to throw me a baby shower. This is the e-Vite that Barb created for the shower. Ain’t it cute?

Honestly, when I moved away from Windsor I left with a heavy heart because I used to work with a bunch of very nice people in Detroit. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to meet another group of people who are so caring and good at what they do. Thank goodness for Facebook, where we have been keeping each other posted on latest happenings in life.

Here are the details of the baby shower.
Date: September 26, 2009 (Saturday)
Time: 1.00pm
Place: P.F. Chang’s Fairlane Mall
Baby Registry: http://www.target.com (search under Christine Leong)
R.S.V.P. barbstebbins@verizon.net or tahasa@comcast.net

I just want to thank Tanya and Barb for being so kind and thoughtful to organize this for me. Showers are not common in my culture, but I feel so blessed to have all these people in my life. Read more about baby showers here.

The event is coming up soon, next weekend to be exact. Andy and I will be making a trip to Detroit for this and I can’t wait to see everyone and catch up with them. We would also like to thank Marcus and Christabel Ong who are fellow Malaysians living in Michigan for letting us stay with them while in Detroit. Much thanks to Amarjot and Karan whom we will be crashing with while passing through Windsor.

Some of you may have known this already, but we’re making it official on this blog that we will be welcoming a baby girl into our lives on November 28. We have picked her English and Malay names, but we will have to wait for the Chinese name since it has to be selected based on her actual time and date of birth.

Here’s what her name means so far:
Madelyn – “woman from Magdala
Suria – Sun in Malay

I have chosen to include Suria in her name to represent the Malaysian heritage from our families. Andy’s parents and myself are from Malaysia and despite the good and the bad that we know about the country, so much about me is rooted in her.

Should you also know, Andy’s birthday is on November 30, oh and my dad’s birthday is on December 1. There is a good chance that Madelyn will be someone’s special birthday present 😛

So this is my new blog. I should have started this a long time ago when Andy and I realized that we were going to be parents some 25 weeks ago. The news caught us by surprise because as much as we love kids, we didn’t think that it was the right time to start a family. I had just lost my job in Detroit, and barely 2 weeks after we found out that we were pregnant, Andy lost his as well. This forced us to move out of the apartment that we were renting in Windsor and into Andy’s parents house in Toronto.

We had plans like having our own house before we start our family, but I guess someone else knew what was better for us. We were happy that we were expecting, but I also had to postpone a follow-up surgery for my elbow that I broke back on July 4th, 2008. This meant that I had to wait until much later for my elbow to be corrected, and I did not like not being able to use my left arm normally.

I wasn’t sure about Andy, but I had major fears about how we were going to cope with so much change at once. With a broken left arm, unemployment and having to move in with the in-laws about 400km away, I felt extremely overwhelmed. I didn’t have much of morning sickness, just general fatigue and the occasional nausea in my first trimester, so I guess I was lucky that way. I was experiencing an insurmountable level of stress at that time, and I read that stress can cause ADHD in the child, and stressed me out even more. I could not help but to worry about how to provide for this child but I was lucky to be receiving unemployment benefits from the Michigan government.

Anyway, I’m not exactly sure about what to write to kick-off this blog but this is pretty much how my journey to mommyhood started. This blog will serve as my place to update family and friends on our preparation for the arrival of the little one, an occasional rant and rave about things that are happening in my life, and my new avenue to document my adventures in the kitchen whenever I’m able to make something in my in-law’s kitchen.

Thanks for visiting and come back soon!
